On Friday 27th February the loudest cheer of the week was reserved for Douglas senior footballer Shane McCarthy, when he walked into the Douglas G.A.A. Sports Hall with the Kelleher Shield won last Saturday. It was a great thrill for the street league youngsters to see their hero parade the shield.
An all-Ireland under 21 medal winner with Cork in 2007, McCarthy is a product of the Douglas GAA street leagues and commented how grateful he was to have benefited from the coaching he received during those formative years.
As the Gaelic Athletic Association celebrates the 125th anniversary of its foundation, the Douglas G.A.A. Street Leagues committee is preparing to commemorate its contribution to the social development of the Douglas community. Thanks to the generous sponsorship of the Douglas Credit Union, the Street Leagues have been instrumental in the development of young talent for the future benefit of the club while playing a central role in the character building of generations of Douglas children.
To celebrate the 125th anniversary of the association’s foundation the Cork County Board has encouraged all clubs to participate in "Lá na gClub" on Sunday 10th May. With this in mind the street leagues committee will be highlighting the role played by the street leagues in the G.A.A. in Douglas.
Following the recent exploits of the Douglas premier intermediate hurlers it is the turn of the younger members of Douglas Hurling & Football Club to deservedly assume their place in the limelight as they prepare for the street league finals. Saturday October 24th is the date set for their big day and the players are requested to meet at St. Columba’s Boys National School at 1.00pm in preparation for the parade which once again will be led by Mr. Tony O’Riordan and the Carrigaline Pipe Band.
The annual general meeting took place on Wednesday 27th January and the outgoing committee was re-elected for the 2010 season. Registration for the new season is scheduled for Saturday 6th February from 11am to 1pm).
Street Leagues registration for 2010 season takes places in the club pavilion.
