Victories for Senior and Junior Football Teams
The Senior footballers had a convincing win over Aghada in the Tadhg Crowley Plate while both Junior teams got their league campaigns off the ground with impressive wins on Sunday 14th February. The Junior (2) league encounter against Rathpeacon was a low scoring affair but Douglas prevailed on a scoreline of 1-06 to 1-02.
The "B" team got their season off to the perfect start with a four point victory over Rathpeacon on Sunday morning last. However it was a victory that came with a heavy price as outstanding defender Brian Kenneally was forced off with a shoulder injury that will keep him out of the game for up to six weeks.
It was a typical first game of the season as both teams struggled for scores. Douglas led 0-2 to nil at half time and went on to lead 1-5 to
0-2 midway through the second half thanks to an excellent goal by Mark O'Callaghan who did all the work himself before scoring. Podge Quinlan
lined out at centre back and did very well in his new position while Ian Bermingham, Kevin O'Mahony, Stephen Hanrahan and Roy Corbett played well also.
Meanwhile, St. Nick's provided the opposition in the Junior (1) league game played at the Glen Field. Douglas were devastating in the opening quarter. Cormac Collins goaled within the first two minutes while Edward Finn kicked a brilliant right wing point. Goals are always on the cards when Stephen Bermingham is positioned close to the opposition's goal and his double in a five minute spell put the game beyond Nick's. The Douglas full forward line of Collins, Bermingham and Colm O'Sullivan were combining brilliantly while Con O'Donnell once again demonstrated his accuracy by scoring seceral points. However, when midfielder Conor McCarthy was forced off with a shoulder injury before the interval Douglas' momentum was disrupted and Nick's capitalised to score a few points of their own.
Late on Nick's tried hard to grab a goal to reignite their challenge but Douglas goalkeeper Bryan McPolin pulled off a succession of brilliant saves to embellish his growing reputation. Others to shine for Douglas were David O'Sullivan, Paul Clarke, Andrew Shinnock and veteran centre half back Albert Clarke.
To complete an impressive opening day to the football season, the senior footballers beat Aghada in the Tadhg Crowley Plate on a scoreline of 2-13 to 2-06. Also, the final of the 2009 minor county league will take place in Carrigtwohill on Monday 15th February. St. Finbarr's provide the opposition and throw in is at 7.30pm.
