League & county champions denied munster hurling success

Douglas 1-12 South Liberties 2-10

A memorable year for the Douglas Intermediate hurlers reached a climax at Mallow on Sunday when Limerick champions South Liberties snatched a dramatic win in the final of the Munster Intermediate Hurling Championship. Douglas defied the elements to dominate the first half and enjoyed a two point interval lead. However, South Liberties deserve great credit for turning the game around in the second half and survived a late Mark Collins goal to cling on for a one point victory. They will now represent the province in the all-Ireland series.

Douglas hurlers through to munster final

It is quickly turning into a golden year for the Douglas hurlers. Dungarvan provided the opposition at Fraher Field on Sunday afternoon. After a sluggish opening, Douglas found their rhythm to lead by two points at the interval before increasing the intensity on the changeover to record a devastating 2-22 to 1-09 victory.

Douglas crowned under 16 premier county football champions

In 1982 when Douglas, captained by Joe O’Brien, defeated a fancied Mallow team in Fermoy to win their first under 16 “A” county football title, a pipe band greeted the team and bus load of supporters to lead the victory parade through the December fog, up the village and into the club. Given that the ’82 win was only Douglas’ second grade “A” underage success since, 1958 naturally it was greatly celebrated.
