28/02/2010: Douglas 1-09 St. Nick’s 1-06


The Douglas senior footballers qualified for the final of the Tadhg Crowley Plate with victory over St. Nick’s in last Sunday’s semi-final replay. However, the game remained in the balance to the final whistle and it took nerves of steel from their wing back Ray Keating to clinch the win when he expertly converted a late penalty kick after Tom Sheehan was grounded.

The Senior footballers had a convincing win over Aghada in the Tadhg Crowley Plate while both Junior teams got their league campaigns off the ground with impressive wins on Sunday 14th February. The Junior (2) league encounter against Rathpeacon was a low scoring affair but Douglas prevailed on a scoreline of 1-06 to 1-02.

On Saturday 13th February, Douglas G.A.A. hosts a 1970's / 1980's adult disco. This follows on the huge success of the St. Stephen's Night Disco. Proceeds drom the dico will benefit all sections of the club. Tickets cost €10 euro each and are available at the club bar.

Brendan Larkin was the recipient of an award from Bórd na nOg last week at the St. Finbarr’s Hurling & Football Club pavilion to mark his outstanding contribution to the G.A.A. in Cork and Bórd na nOg in particular during the past half century.

Junior "B" Football Challenge

The annual general meeting took place on Wednesday 27th January and the outgoing committee was re-elected for the 2010 season. Registration for the new season is scheduled for Saturday 6th February from 11am to 1pm).

As the countdown to the new season begins, the Douglas under 21 footballers played Bishopstown in a challenge match in Moneygourney last Saturday afternoon. The match benefited both sides and was played in a competitive spirit facilitated by a referee that was prepared to allow the game flow as much as possible. Douglas forged an early lead and eventually held on to win on a scoreline of 0-07 to 0-5. Cormac Collins and Olan Bermingham scored two points a piece while Ed Finn, Richard Martin and Conor Lucey also contributed points.

The annual fathers versus sons Christmas challenge was played on 27th December as the under 13 footballers took on their dads. The game was refereed by Eddie Murphy who was kept on his toes as the youngsters had a once in a lifetime opportunity to vent some teenage tension at their unsuspecting dads.

The Douglas G.A.A. Puc Fada competition took place on Cooney’s Lane on New Year’s Day and the event was a tremendous success. The South County Bar sponsored first prize which Colm O’Connor presented to the winning team of Shane O’Donoghue, Willie Coveney and Fearghal Hayes. In second place were Barry O’Donoghue, Alan Cadogan and Stephen Dwyer while Paul Lynch, Denis O’Riordan and Ciara Lynch came in third. The competition was a great success and very well organised by Willie Coveney and Paddy Barry.

The Puc Fada has been rescheduled for New Year's Day. Start time at Ardfield is at 1.15pm.
